Bible Study Notes

Session 1 - The Problem of Sin:

1. Read Genesis 3:1-8.
Thinking about the grander defintion of sin, what was Adam and Eve's sin?

2. Read Romans 5:12, Romans 3:23, and Romans 8:7.
What do these verse tell us about our nature?

3. Read Ephesians 2:3.
What does "we were by nature objects of wrath" mean?

4. Something to think about (we will talk more about this in future Bible Studies):
What's the difference between a sinner and a Christian who sins?

Session 2 - Religion vs. The Gospel:

1. Read Philippians 3:3-9.

a) What exactly is "confidence in the flesh?" Would you say religious people put a lot of confidence in the flesh?

b) Paul talks about his "resume" from verses 4-6. Sounds pretty respectable to me. Why doesn't Paul put any "confidence in the flesh?" Why isn't Paul proud of his past resume and list of good works?

c) In verse 9, if righteousness doesn't come from obeying and following all the rules, where does righteousness come from? How can we have this righteousness?

2. Read Galatians 5:4-6.
"Falling away from grace" is a serious matter. Paul is not saying here that it's actually possible for a genuine Christian to fall away, but is saying that those who reject the gospel and seek to be justified by their own good works have fallen away. How is seeking to be justified by the law falling away from grace?

3. Galatians 5:22-25 talks about the Fruit of the Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit is a result of Christ imparting His righteousness on us. A religious person may try to DO these things by their own efforts. What do you think is the difference between a Christian who exhibits these characteristics in his/her life, and a religious person who TRIES to BE these things? Read the previous verses 19-21.
